  • The contest includes this year : FOILBOARD RACES - WINGFOIL RACES

MKB MASTERS 2021 FOIL & WING EDITION
The MKB MASTERS are back this year !

Miami Kiteboarding,

2021 MASTERS Schedule & Procedures

Date: Sunday, May 2nd 2022 from 10am to 6pm

1- Weather consideration:

Forecast : Wind SE 10 to 13knots

Tides at Virginia Key Bear cut : Low tide 8.17am / high 2.16pm

The wind is forecasted to start around 10 knots then strengthen later in the day up to 13 knots ,

For this reason the foilboard races will run in the morning, and the Wingfoil races in the afternoon as they typically need more wind to standup and foil.

2- Schedule

10.00am : Registration on the beach ( MKB Blue tent )

11.00am to 2pm : Foilboard races

2.30pm to 4pm : Wingfoil races

5.00pm: Drinks & Awards ceremony at MKB shop

The following Procedures apply identically to WING-FOILING, unless specified differently.

3- Categories:

4 categories will be awarded : Men, Women, Junior <18 , Senior >50

They will race altogether, and will be scored through points system.

1 trophy per winner

4-Divisions & Races logistic:

For safety reason and to limit the risk of tangling, each race will be run in pool of 10 Foilers at once

Considering the difference of technical level amongst the contestants we will create 2 divisions : GOLD & SILVER

So each contestant will have a fair competition and enough races worth of this participation to the contest, regardless of his level

To determine which Division you will compete in, a first race will act as a “qualifier round”: the first top half racers will run the in the GOLD division , and the second half will run in SILVER for the rest of the competition.

Basically, there is 2 contests at once : the “pro” and the “amateurs” , but the selection is natural and organic according to your level.

And each division will have their winner’s trophy : Men, women, Junior, Senior

WING-FOILING: due to low number of registered contestants there will likely be only one division

5- Courses

There will be 2 courses format:

Upwind/ downwind format

Reaching format

One or 2 rounds around the buoys will be decided on that day according to wind strength

Again the idea here is to make it fair and enjoyable for all contestants : not everyone master the roll tack or the jibe required for the Upwind/Downwind course , but if you ride fast you can catch up points in the Reaching race !

The “Qualifier Round” will be the Upwind/Downwind course format, as it reveals quickly the technical level differences between contestants, and thus will determine the division you will run for the next races: gold or Silver

Each division will compete through one Upwind/Downwind course AND one Reaching Course , to give more chances to all contestants.

The winner is the one who scored the most in each race

A third race will be run in case of a tie in each division

WING-FOILING Course format : for the purpose of accessibility , the Wing-foiling course will be a flat triangle with a reaching and a slight upwind/downwind buoy to round. So to minimize the tacks and keep it competitive for all.

6- Scoring

A simple points system applies for scoring as follow :

1st place = 1 point

2nd place = 2 points ….and so on !

So the Least point is the winner.

7- Starting Procedures

After the Registrations, look for your name on the Race board by MKB tent , to know in which race you are running

On Land Attention Signal:

a tall GREEN FLAG, followed with a long blowhorn will announce 5 Minutes before the Starting procedure is launched at the committee boat in the water : that’s when rush to the Course area if you don’t want to miss the start !

On Water Starting Procedures:

3min before start : YELLOW FLAG + GREEN FLAG are UP + long blow

1min before start : YELLOW FLAG is DOWN + long blow

Start : GREEN FLAG is DOWN + long blow

8- Premature Start & Recall procedures :

Contestant doing a premature start must go back around the Buoy : RED FLAG UP + long blowhorn signal

More than 5 Racers in a premature start position : full recall : RED FLAG UP + YELLOW + 5 Blowhorn

9- Tangling and Right of Way rules (ROW) :

Tangling : Both racers disqualified

Note: If a blatant and voluntary fault from a racer, is noticed by the race committee and/or Jetski patrol, the faulty contestant only is disqualified, the other kiters will be re-positionned

ROW penalties : each ROW violation disqualify the contestant
